Hello all ;

 

Recentry thru the net, I just came across this site : http://www.chepe.com.mx/esp_html/presentacion/presentacion.html

It shows a passenger service in Mexico (with a little american hand, I believe this Ferromex company is partially owned by UP). I didn't know that there were passenger services south of the border. Anwone knows about the existance of other trains of this type - long distance - over there ?

Also where can I find old, detailed, mexican schedules (i.e. : not like the ones listed in the old 'Official Guides', wich are condensed versions).

The Chepe train runs a regular route on Ferromex.  While it serves a number of local villages, a big part of the business is tourist traffic.  At times, there will be multiple sections with the private and 1st class cars on one trains and the second class cars on the other.

The operation has worked hard to make the train a good and safe experience and it operates through some of the best and most scenic country in northern Mexico.

There are a few other unique trains in Mexico, basically aimed at the tourist market.  The Tequilla Express is one of these trains.

Schedules for these few trains are generally listed on their own individual websites or in local materials.

 It is the Copper Canyon route (spectacular) which runs from the city of Chihuahua in the north central part of the country on a southwesterly course to Los Mochis on the coast near Topolobambo. When I rode it in late 2007 there were two trains a day, a faster first class train with diner and a slower second class train (still decent equipment) that both run on a daylight schedule. Pleasant equipment and friendly crews. Quite dramatic scenery in the middle of the run.
