Amtrak stock was provided as compensation to the Class Is when Amtrak acquired their passenger equipment in 1971. Some of this stock has been bought and sold over the years. The majority shareholder is American Financial Group. The second largest shareholder is BNSF. </p><p>The issue of stockholder rights came into play a couple years ago when the Laney board proposed spinning off the NEC, as described in <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/13/national/13amtrak.html">this article</a>. </p>
