Expect the Eagle to be late, maybe very late. My wife just made a round trip on the TE from Marshall to Chicago and it was late both ways. Going north it was about 1 hr late leaving Marshall and arrived in Chicago 3-1/2 hrs late. She returned yesterday and the train was 4+ hrs late arrrivng in Marshall at 12:15 vs its scheduled arrival time of 8:09 am. Crews are changed at Marshall and in talking to waiting crew members they told me that recently the Eagle was late most every trip. Before leaving for the station be sure to call Amtrak's 1-800 number and get the train's status to avoid what might otherwise be a very long wait at the Ft. Worth depot. If someone is meeting you in San Antonio be sure to tell them to also call and get the trains ETA.

There is some time in the Eagle schedule at Fort Worth to allow for late arrivals from East Texas.  So don't take the schedule performance at Marshall to be the schedule performance further South.  The one time I was expecting to arrive late in Austin due to track work before Dallas and between Ft. Worth and Temple -- we arrived 15 minutes early.  Best bet is to check the internet or call the 800 number.

I have been tracking the performance of the Texas Eagle (21 and 22).  Since the first of the year Number 21 has been late into Fort Worth, on average, by 52 minutes.  It has been late, on average, by 54 minutes into San Antonio.  The median is 25 and 35 minutes.

Number 21 has been on time or less than 20 minutes late at Fort Worth approximately 18 per cent of the time.    It has been on time or less than 20 minutes late at San Antonio approximately seven per cent of the time.

Number 22 has been late, on average, by 37 minutes into Fort Worth.  The median is 29 minutes.  It has been on time or less than 20 minutes late only two per cent of the time.

If you take 21 to San Antonio, don't plan to arrive on time.  But unless you hit an unusual delay, you should be no more than an hour or so late.  It is relatively rare for the train to arrive after midnight, although it happens from time to time.
