Amfleet II and Horizon questions
Posted by hf1001 on Thursday, August 30, 2007 5:34 PM

I read that Amfleet IIs  have a vestibule on the doors instead of the normal auto sliding doors. Does the vestibule open like superliner vestibules do? Does the conductor on the train with these type of cars use the vestibule to give the engineer a car count like on most trains in amtrak? Also, I have seen horizons with duth door style vestibules and some with just windows, does the horizon with only the windows open also like supers or amfleet IIs?

Hope Someone Can Answer This, HF1001

Not sure of the answer to all your questions, but here goes.  The amfleet IIs have manually opening doors.  I think they swing open, but I'm not sure.  I don't think they have dutch doors.  The horizon cars all have manually operated doors.  Some slide and some are dutch doors that swing.  From looking at the cars, it appears that the sliding doors are older and are being replaced by the swinging dutch doors; I'm not sure of the advantages.  A while back I posted a question called "Amtrak car doors."  You might find some of the answers interesting.

The Amfleet II cars have the sliding vestibule doors, just like Amfleet I.The Amfleet II cars have only one vestibule instead of two on the Amfleet I cars.
