Combined Dispatcher and Engineer mistake.  Dispatcher caused the wrong route to be lined and the Engineer didn't catch that he was on the wrong route.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

Back in the 80's, I was on one of my All Aboard America fare trips that included the Amtrak Montrealer train that went from Montreal through Vermont to NYC and Washington DC and somewhere North of Rouses Point, the train came to a stop. After a wait of about 15 minutes, we backed up about three train lengths. Came to a stop, waited about a minute, then proceeded forward. So I queried the crew, Why? Seems that the switch was lined for the wrong route and the engineer recognized it as he passed the home signal. Then he had to contact the dispatch, get clearance to back up behind the signal and wait for the switch to be relined and signal cleared. Which is what should happen. Ever happen to you Balt?
