BART’s Antioch diesel extension will open next month

Using standard-gauge diesel multiple units instead of BART's wide-gauge electric MUs, Bay Area Rapid Transit's (BART) 10-mile extension to Antioch, California, will start carrying  passengers on 26 May.  It is located in the median of State Route 4 and connect to the agency's station in Pittsburg, California.  It’s cost is $525 million, approximately one- half the estimated cost an electric-powered line according to the agency officials.  It is expected to serve 2,400 riders in each direction per hour during rush hours.  It will connect with the existing BART system in Pittsburg, have an additional Pittburg station, and the terminal in Antioch.

Joel Keller, a BART Board member, said: "This is a new dawn for transit in this part of the Bay Area. Making this visionary project a reality took the long-term dedication of East County residents, and the commitment of many local, regional, state, and federal leaders."
