Here is an image that I have created which shows the two routes that I had previously proposed.
I wasn't suggesting that the main use of this link is for that, it would mostly be for a rail link between the Worcester Line and Wachusett Line. Although if necessary by all means they could use it for that purpose.
There exists a rail link between the ex-B&A-NYC line and the B&M line to North Station. It is usually referred to as "The Grand Junction." It crosses the Charles River near Boston University, runs behind MIT near Vasser street, and connects to the Sommerville Yards as well as North Station. It also coninues to industries in Chelsie. I believe the MBTA may have already bought it from CSX for frequent equipment moves as well as future passenger service. (But it has lots of grade crossings, and is by no means high speed or fast.) CSX still does run freight over it occasionlly.
If a link between the Wachusett Line and Worcester Line was created then in the wintertime they could run the ski trains from Worcester as well as Boston, so that college students can go skiing. Also, this would provide a link between North and South Station. The connections to Worcester are present, the options are connecting from Worcester to Gardner. If they do this then they could open up an additional station in Gardner on the actual Wachusett Line and a stop in Holden on the link. The other option being running the link to Ayer, where it continues Westward once it reaches the junction. If they chose this scenario they could add additional stations in West Boylston, and Clinton along the link.
