Automatic fare collection systems get a boost
Posted by blue streak 1 on Saturday, November 18, 2017 10:35 AM

Automatic fare collection systems have been hog tied because of  patent infringment suits. Smart systems LLC had made the patent claims on abstract ideas. Circuit court of appeals upheld a district court in a Chicago case saying that claims were invalid and actual patents were not valid.  Guess it will go to the Supremes so to apply USA wide ?

Had often wondered why the slow roll out of various systems.

EDIT  Wonder if this may apply to other systems such as road tolls ?  Anyone know of different rulinngs in other Circuits ?

Don't know the specifics of road tolls, however, it is my belief that some states use incompatible technologies from other states.

While I personally have little interaction with toll roads, if the technologies were compatible between all the toll systems that I have occasion to use from time to time I might join.  As it is, I would just be throwing more money away.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

I do know that the I-Pass is accepted on the Indiana Toll Road and is also valid on various East Coast toll roads and bridges so there is a certain amount of compatability among various systems.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
