Back in the sixties, it was possible to wander around in the Capitol building without being stopped. I even found the room where the bier (first used for President Lincoln's body?) was kept. On one of my visits to Washington, I found the Senate subway system and rode both routes. The only time anyone spoke to me was when I stood up in the House balcony so I could see something better--and I was told to sit down.

Now, I do not even think of visiting the building, and the closest I come to it is when passing through the tunnel on the east edge of Capitol Hill.

That's interesting!

Back in the 60's my family did a trip to Washington and we rode the Capitol subway. Back in those days if you were in the Capitol you had pretty much free run of the place, within reason. My father recognized one of the senators on the train and asked me if I'd like to meet him, but I was a bit too shy, so I passed.  I don't remember who he was, though.

Different times.  No way could any of us just walk in off the street and do it now.

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

I don't have a leg to stand on.
