I've been following this on www.NorthJersey.com and www.nj.com. According to the latest the engineer is 48 years old, certainly not young enough to preclude any health issues on his part but anything's possible. I'm suspecting a mechanical failure of some kind but that's just a guess on my part.
The locomotive event recorder's been recovered but not the cab cars's, it's still too dangerous to go in there.
For a photo tour and history of the NJT Lackawanna Terminal in Hoboken go to www.subwaynut.com and follow the New Jersey Transit Rail headings. It's pretty comprehensive and will show you areas the media hasn't gone to.
Bicycles are allowed on many NJTransit trains, but riding bicycles anywhere through the station is a safety hazard and not allowed. Thus, the sign.
"Walk Your Bicycle"
As of 11:30 AM, the only information from NJTransit is that this was train # 1614 from Spring Valley NY on the Pascack Valley line; the track was #5. All other info is unconfirmed. Much media speculation, most of it is questionable.
