Is this the beginning of the end for APTA

I suspect there will always be enough light rail and transit system membership ... and Federal subsidy money assisting in providing light rail and transit services ... to keep APTA going as an organization.

I do expect other operators of heavy-rail service or older infrastructure to follow suit in quitting APTA, and it will be interesting to see what organization(s) come to represent their interests better.

In a previous administration I think we would have seen the O&M dept. at the AAR try to organise something. I don't think the current O&M head would have that vision.

Of course in an odd twist of fate the passenger car standards (intercity and commuter) were maintained by the O&M dept of the AAR. In 1997 those standards were given to APTA, that set up the Passenger Rail Equipment Safety Standards group to update and broaden them.
