In 2007, when I rode the RTD Light Rail, the terminal was located right next to Denver Union Station. When I look at Google Earth, I see that the Light Rail Terminal has been relocated 2 blocks to the NW, away from Union Station. I am at a loss to undestand why this was done. Can some one give a reason why they were separated?
It was probably moved to give space for the grand renovation that the station recieved during 2012-2014. The trainshed and new tracks for the new airport service are now where the light rail station was.
The Union Station renovation was done within it's existing footprint, at least in the area in question. A bus terminal was built in a small portion of the former light rail terminal, but it mostly seems to be new buildings.
Indeed, what I was looking at turned out to be the layover yard just past the station. It is odd that it was moved, although the transit mall that was created looks pleasant.
I did the transition from Amtrak to the light rail system last fall and found it weird that I had to walk 2 blocks to get there: poor planning, IMO. Signage was also very poor - had to ask 3 people where the LR system was. I don't understand how anyone would think that the airport link needs to be closer to Amtrak than the LR system.
