Probably a simple derivative on an old Traveling Wilbury's lyric:
"In Germany everything's legal, as long as you don't get caught"

It's easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission.

The artist and his pallet

http://studiodwh.wordpress.com/artist-in-residence/residents/tomas-moravec/

http://www.tomasmoravec.cz/paleta.htm

Tomas Moravec talks about his joyride in the video at link below (in the 2nd half). According to the English translation, he says,

“As for my project, the pallet, the idea was born in Plzen, even though I carried it out in Bratislava. The reason is simple – in Bratislava, the spacing of tram rails is narrower. I noticed that it corresponds to the size of standard Euro pallets. Pallets to me always had a potential for movement, for becoming a means of transport. This is how it started. At the time, I traveled a lot between Bratislava, Plzen and Prague because I had an internship there during the spring. The project sublimated right out of the situation and it conveys my impression of the place. It doesn’t have to get dramatic, but at the same time there’s a feeling of being bound. This was a healthy attempt to loosen everything, the movement of people in the city. We were taking these rides and documenting them.”

He won't be arrested for fare invasion, as he doesn't actually ride on a streetcar or with assistance of a streetcar, but he might be arrested for disturbance of public transport and misuse of right of ways.

I think this video illustrates some folks' idea of the Amtrak of the future.  I mean, think of it this way:

1.  It uses no fossil fuels and burns energy cleanly with no carbon footprint.

2..  It's not for long distance travel, just local.

3.  It runs, not on its own rails, but someone else's, and clearly it must move aside for more important traffic, resulting in delays; connections are not guaranteed.

4.  No dining car.  Passengers must bring their own provender.

5.  Certainly no sleepers are carried; all passengers travel bare-bones coach with no seats to be had.

6.  It gets no operating subsidy but must be paid for in its entirety by the passengers who actually use the service.

7.  The equipment is old-looking and weather-beaten; maintenance looks to be minimal.

8.  Everyone in sight is traveling by some other method because this seems too primitive and the hours of service erratic.

9.  A passenger's view is unhindered by too-small windows.  Fresh air is available, not air-conditioning which isn't cost effective on short local runs.

10.  No unnecessary and expensive redcap service at either end point of service.

11.  All this being noted and regretted, it's still a fun and different way to travel.

Well, you get the idea.

Perhaps this video is a glimpse of Amtrak's future after the elections.

Doesn't appear to have much in the way of crash protection and is at a mass disadvantage when in collision with other vehicles on or off track.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

Air conditioned but no heat, no crash bars, no computer signage or intercom system, no emergency lighting, no side markers or running lights. Probably built by the lowest bidder which begs the question, "does it meet specs?" I doubt FRA approved nor PCC designed.

In the overhead scene at the end it sure looks to me like there's dual guage.

By NKP guy on Thursday, July 10, 2014 I think this video illustrates some folks' idea of the Amtrak of the future. I mean, think of it this way:

1. It uses no fossil fuels and burns energy cleanly with no carbon footprint.
What about the carbon footprint involved in the pallet manufacture or the wheels? Or perhaps the human ingestion of food and the potential of illdigested material causing offgassing of Flammable Aeromatic Residual Things (FART)?

2.. It's not for long distance travel, just local.
It may take a while but you could add a sail to catch the wind.

3. It runs, not on its own rails, but someone else's, and clearly it must move aside for more important traffic, resulting in delays; connections are not guaranteed.
What is more important then an artists creation?

4. No dining car. Passengers must bring their own provender.
I saw plenty of shops. Certainly there are a few take out places and one or two that deliver.

5. Certainly no sleepers are carried; all passengers travel bare-bones coach with no seats to be had.
Easily modified to create a better vehicle. One of the advantages of wood.

6. It gets no operating subsidy but must be paid for in its entirety by the passengers who actually use the service.
Get the pallet from OBB or DB. They both have plenty of europallets and might like the advertising.

7. The equipment is old-looking and weather-beaten; maintenance looks to be minimal.
Rail sounded like CWR. And in a worse case situation get a new pallet.

8. Everyone in sight is traveling by some other method because this seems too primitive and the hours of service erratic.
But look at the looks of disbelief.

9. A passenger's view is unhindered by too-small windows. Fresh air is available, not air-conditioning which isn't cost effective on short local runs.
What glass? It does need a windscreen. Besides you get to take the scenic view route.

10. No unnecessary and expensive redcap service at either end point of service.
Are you sure you don't need someone to handle the pallet?

11. All this being noted and regretted, it's still a fun and different way to travel.

Well, you get the idea.

Perhaps this video is a glimpse of Amtrak's future after the elections.
Maybe then we can put the tea party bunch on a trip outran DC!!

Thx IGN :-)
