These cars are stored in Cadillac, MI, about 200 miles NW of Detroit and Ann Arbor. They were still there yesterday when I passed the yard. They have been there long enough that they show up in a year old Google Earth image at 44°16'8.86"N 85°24'28.54"W. They were reported undergoing individual refurbishing, cycling thru GLC's Owosso shops, which are about 70 miles north of Ann Arbor.
Leo_Ames The Regional Transportation Authority took things over back in the 70's and was rebranded as Metra in the 1980's. These were Metra owned and operated for years. They weren't retired when the Burlington was merged out of existence and left to sit until today.

The BN operation was somewhat unique in that the equipment was not owned by Metra, it was owned by the West Suburban Mass Transit District.

An "expensive model collector"
These cars are ex-Chicago, Burlington & Quincy bi-level commuter cars that were built by Budd in the 1950's for service between Chicago and Aurora. They were never owned by Metra.

1/2 Million to 17 cars equates to the neighborhood of $30K per car. No body wants to spend additional monies to rehab equipment, but in the world of railroading $30K on railcars that cost $1 to $2M to replace is chump change
Never too old to have a happy childhood!
So much for railyard security. Hate to sound bitter, but I suppose if these same vandals were doing something positive like railfanning at stations and grade crossings the local authorities would have been all over them in a heartbeat.
