Please correct me if wrong --- was AMTRAK prevented in the past from going into some power business due to this act ?. I seem to vaguely remember that it was distribution using ROW but that is very fuzzy ???
It was repealed about 4 years ago...The PUCH was responsible for the demise of the Interurbans because the power lines now had to be seprarated from the interurbans that ran benieth them in ownership...The railroads could get in the power buisness now and the power companys can now build there own railroads to haul there own coal....only a couple of mine to plant operations exist...now its more of a barging chip
The Public Utility Companies Holding Act was a by-product of the frenzied finance of the 1920's and should be considered in that light. The public continues to gripe about utility rates and it would be a lot harder to justify an electric bill that helps subsidize a money-losing interurban railway or suburban operation.
Well, it certainly turned our economic system virtually upside down, changed the way of doing business for ever and made bottom line accounting the ruling grade for all products and services.

I think combining utilities with railways might be the way to go. Cross subsidization might not be the way to go but a combined bill offering both railway and electricity service might be the way to go. Removing other restrictions on electric railway companies should also be done as well such price fixing which is still in effect in New York. Anyways the article does a good job of describing the disastrous effects of PUHCA. The PUHCA was created under logic similar to glass-steagall which is to separate companies. Some of the restrictions are still effect.
