Oh, they do...plus they still have track inspectors who keep an eye on things daily.  But a quick change in temperature or humidity or a slam by a flat wheel or unseen fault or fatigue can cause a broken rail.  And it is no person's fault...it is just an accident no matter how policed and plotted.

Question ---  does NYC TRANSIT use some kind of rail testing machine much like the sperry rail testing machines that are used on the class 1s?  also if so how often do they test their rails ?

Our Ridewithmehenry trips often utilize or even feature riding the subway system.  One day we were in Brooklyn and took D train to Washington Sq then A train to Penn Station.

Check the lyrics.  The A-train was supposed to take you, "Up to Sugar Hill," presumably from somewhere downtown.  This derailment was well uptown as seen from Harlem - 125th Street.

In the late '50s I rode that line frequently.  Then I joined the Air Force - and haven't been on (or anywhere near) it since.

Chuck (Native Noo Yawka - but I left)

Yes, if you can, call Duke Ellington and ask him to hold off on his promoting the "A" Train until the line is perfectly safe again.Smile

New York Subway Train Derails
Posted by John WR on Sunday, December 23, 2012 4:40 PM

Saturday, December 23.  The New York Times reports one car of a southbound A train jumped the tracks on Manhattan's upper west side yesterday about 9:00 am.  400 people were riding on the train.  There were no injuries.  A rescue train backed up to the derailed train so passengers could walk from one train to the other.  Service on the line was suspended and both A trains and other lines suffered delays.  Authorities say a broken rail caused the accident but why the rail broke is not known.
