Just another day in the Northwest...
The last three days we had a huge storm that brought the first major rain this winter. So, I'm not surprised, usually this is more common in November, but this year it was dry and very cold. So was December.
I think that a large section of the bluffs that are collapsing is not on BNSF property, so they can't really do much in some areas.

DeggestyApparently the paved surfaces of these lots prevents the precipitation from soaking into the ground as it used to, and send it to the slope immediately by the track. Should drains be installed in the surface of these lots so that the water can soak in as it used to? Something has to be done about the water that now soaks the ground immediately to the east of the right of way, it seems.
Hard surfaces are compromising our ground water in urban areas all over the country. Most places don't have the severe and repeated mud slides you are having but there are a lot of other problems associated with all of the places we have paved over.
Sub surface drainage is the answer. But the water needs to be directed to places where it can recharge the aquifer and not just sent down a river.
