MBTA tribulations
Posted by blue streak 1 on Friday, July 29, 2022 9:07 PM

FTA has ordered a safety and retraining shutdown of the T starting at midnight Friday night.  What is not said is What part?  Subways? Green line?  buses?  FRA might get into this but there has been no major problems AFAIK of the RR section.

My question is why are they doing this

Most probable answer - because they can.

MBTA Green Line E Branch 16-day closure successfully completed, E Branch service to resume early
Aug. 22, 2022
The Capital Transformation team has delivered improved safety and service reliability to Green Line riders.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority‘s (MBTA) Green Line E Branch service resumes today following the successful completion of track and Green Line Train Protection System (GLTPS) work during a 16-day closure.
As part of the MBTA’s Capital Programs, the Capital Transformation team has delivered improved safety and service reliability to Green Line riders with crews having replaced more than 2,750 feet of track, two pieces of special track work and installed wayside equipment across the branch.
“Full access closures such as those completed on the Green Line allow the MBTA to deliver much needed progress to the system as quickly as possible,” said MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak. “I know construction can be disruptive, but I want to thank all of our riders for their understanding as we continue to move forward as an authority to deliver the service they deserve.”
With the B, C and E Branches complete, the Green Line Transformation project will turn to the D Branch for the last scheduled Green Line closure of the year. Beginning towards the end of September, the D Branch will have a total of three nine-day full access closures:
·         Saturday, September 24 – Sunday, October 2
·         Saturday, October 8 – Sunday, October 16
·         Saturday, October 22 – Sunday, October 30
Work to be completed includes the replacement of more than 5,000 feet of track, upgrading more than five station crossings and the installation of wayside equipment for GLTPS. Most of the full-depth track replacement work will take place between Chestnut Hill and Newton Center Stations. Prep work for these scheduled improvements will begin Sept. 19 and will not interfere with regular service.
“The Capital Transformation team continues to drive the importance of safety, reliability and progress across the Green Line,” said MBTA Chief of Capital Transformation Angel Peña. “As we shift focus to our final scheduled surge on the Green Line, it is our top priority to keep all riders informed as we make these critical improvements to the D Branch. As always, we are constantly looking for ways to better the system in the most efficient manner possible. We appreciate all Green Line riders' patience and flexibility as we continue to improve service for all.”
Alternative service will be available for all D Branch riders throughout the three closures. Free, accessible shuttle buses will stop at stations between Riverside and Kenmore Stations. Shuttles are unable to stop at Beaconsfield Station due to narrow roads in the area. Riders can use Reservoir Station or Dean Road on the C Branch to access the Green Line.

Foxboro Weekday Commuter Rail Service Pilot to Start September 12

Posted on August 24, 2022

One-year service pilot program includes 11 inbound trips and 10 outbound trips between South Station and Foxboro on weekdays; free parking at Foxboro.

On Monday, September 12, a one-year weekday Commuter Rail service pilot between South Station and Foxboro station will start, allowing riders to travel easily and directly between Boston and Foxboro. In spring 2020, the MBTA cancelled its Foxboro Weekday Service Pilot due to the pandemic. The service starting on September 12 is a one-year pilot program offering 11 inbound and 10 outbound weekday trains between Foxboro and Boston via the Franklin Commuter Rail line.

“We’re excited to again launch this weekday service pilot between Foxboro and South Station, providing access to transit for more Commuter Rail riders,” said MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak. “We appreciate the collaboration with the Kraft Group, including in offering free parking at the station for the duration of the pilot. We continue to be committed to improving public transit across all of the communities we serve, and we look forward to analyzing the pilot’s data upon completion of the pilot.”

“We’re thrilled to welcome commuters back to Foxboro station this fall,” said Brian Earley, Vice President and General Manager of Patriot Place. “As the workforce continues to return to in-person work, Foxboro station’s commuter-friendly schedule, free parking, and 500-plus parking spaces create an easy, efficient, and cost-effective option for commuters. We greatly appreciate the partnership of the MBTA, MassDOT, and Town of Foxborough as we work to relaunch this weekday commuter service in a way that inspires economic development and is beneficial to the community and commuters alike.”

“As passengers continue to return to the Commuter Rail, we are proud to offer a reliable service that meets their changing needs,” said Abdellah Chajai, CEO of Keolis Commuter Services. “In partnership with the MBTA, we are offering more regular service throughout the day, and now we are expanding service to the Foxboro community. These are all examples of how the MBTA and Keolis are adapting to meet the current and future needs of our Commuter Rail passengers.”

More Information about the Foxboro Weekday Service Pilot

The North Station Commuter Rail Fare gates will be active on Saturday, October 1st.
At this time, passengers will be required to tap, swipe or scan their fare to enter and
exit the concourse through the gates.

Accessible fare gates are also available.

The new gates will eliminate platform-door ticket checks and offer a more consistent experience
for passengers on all lines.

Passengers must keep their tickets. You will still have to show tickets to conductors on board
trains to verify your zone. Passengers exiting at North Station without a valid fare will have to
purchase one through the mTicket app or from a staff member in order to exit through the gates.

Staff will always be present at North Station when the gates are active.
