The Bird's the Word
Posted by Gramp on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 9:21 PM

Bird Rides has gone from "scratch" to 2 billion in value.  Another way to get around that doesn't need a jillion in new government spending to make happen.  The founder grew up in Appleton.  The city agreed to a test this spring.  So far the scooters have been used 30,000 times to travel here, there, and everywhere in town (but not on downtown College Avenue sidewalks).

In Ottawa, there are several scooter companies. Every afternoon you find them all over the sidewalk but in the morning they are lined up neatly wherever the demand is. Do the riders obey traffic laws? Much like bicycle riders here in Toronto, the answer is no. I was in Berlin 2 years ago and there must be at least 4 scooter companies and there again it's scooter chaos.

Scooters were tested in Chicago but the test period was not renewed for a variety of reasons, including careless usage and scooters left lying just about anywhere after the rider was finished with it.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
