Three individuals were in custody after they shot six people in East St Louis (one other person was injured but apparently not shot) Attempting to escape, they rammed a commuter train
"According to KMOV-4, about 10 train passengers were treated for injuries on the scene. The station said the suspects tried to outrun the train at a nearby crossing with their getaway car."
Too bad they weren't just a bit faster and were on the crossing when the locomotive arrived
The only commuter rail operation in metropolitan St. Louis is Metrolink, which is a light rail operation.

It also appears that the person who crashed into the train was one of the shooting victims, not one of the suspects.

I believe the specific job title is "Operator." This is general Light-Rail usage at this time. But Motorman is a classic urban transportation title, and I certainly would not object to its use.
"Engineer" went out on the BMT when electric MUs replaced steam engines.
