MTA New York City Transit today announced that work on the over 100-year-old Myrtle Viaduct on the M  line will be
successfully completed on time and on budget this weekend, with regular service to resume on April 30 at 5:00 a.m.
Combined with the reopening of the Fresh Pond Bridge this past September, service for customers along these crucial
elevated structures in Brooklyn and Queens will be fully restored on time and on budget, and made resilient for decades
to come.
“Completing this project on time and on budget was critical to show how serious we are about minimizing impacts on
our customers as we perform this important work, said MTA Chairman Joseph Lhota. “This is a major win for our
customers and the surrounding community. We promised to modernize and stabilize the subway system, and we thank our
customers for their continued patience as we take the necessary steps to do so.”
“It is imperative that M train service operates as efficiently as possible for all our customers who rely on it,” said NYC
Transit
President Andy Byford. “When we couple the long-term fortification work on this line with the smoother ride and quieter tracks, we
 can be sure we’re on our way to building the world-class transit system we’ve pledged to deliver. I’m very proud of my team for
 completing this job safely, on time, and on budget.”
The two elevated structures had been deteriorating after more than a century of 24/7 operation and exposure to the elements, but
 remained critical for the 60,000 riders who rely upon that segment of the  line each weekday. Ridership at the seven stations
along the Myrtle Avenue line has grown 53 percent since 2000. The Fresh Pond Bridge, which carries trains between Fresh Pond
 Road and Middle Village-Metropolitan Avenue, is used by an average of 9,000 customers on weekdays. The 310-foot Myrtle
 Viaduct, which carries trains between Myrtle Avenue and Central Avenue, transports an average of 50,000 customers each weekday.
 To ensure the long-term health of the line, the structures needed to be demolished and re-built from the ground up.
 
MTA New York City Transit is reminding customers that it will begin critical structural, safety, and other repairs and improvements
 to two non-adjacent subway stations on the B & C line -- 72 St and 86 St – on May 7 and June 4, respectively.
In order to expedite the projects, the stations will be closed while the work is being done, with B and C  trains skipping those
 stations but still available at 81 St, 96 St and 59 St-Columbus Circle.  72 St will reopen in early October, and 86 St will reopen in
late October.
When the projects are completed, customers will benefit from critical structural and safety repairs and improvements to concrete
 and steel features such as columns, beams, platforms, walls and stairs. There will also be other improvements and upgrades such
 as improved waterproofing, turnstile areas with new glass barriers, new security cameras, LED lighting for increased light and
 energy efficiency, and enhanced signage for easier navigation including digital, real-time service change and train and bus
 arrival information. 
“We appreciate our customers’ patience while we do these critical repairs and improvements,” said NYC Transit President Andy
 Byford.  “These temporary closures will prepare these stations for decades of continued service. We’re deploying customer
 service personnel to help riders through this transition and will hold the contractor to the aggressive work schedule.”
For alternate service during these projects, riders can use the adjacent B and C  stations at 81 St, 96 St and 59 St-Columbus Circle.
 Service on the M10 bus, which runs along the route of the B and C, line, has been increased to help customers choosing to take
 the bus.
Extra customer service personnel will be on hand, and officials will monitor subway and bus service in the area, to help riders
 while the projects are underway.  These Contracts for the projects were awarded in October 2017, and the closure dates were first
announced in February of this year.
Station signage has been alerting customers to the closure dates, and these projects have also been the subject of two public
 meetings held locally recently.
MTA New York City Transit and the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) announced two town hall meetings to be held
 in Manhattan and Brooklyn in May to discuss the Canarsie Tunnel Reconstruction project coming to parts of the L line in April 2019.  The meetings
 are the latest in a long series of public meetings and workshops that have been held about this project since 2016.
As part of ongoing efforts to engage communities affected by project, NYC Transit President Andy Byford and NYCDOT Commissioner Polly
 Trottenberg, as well as other agency representatives, will outline alternate service plans and take questions from members of the public. Transit and
NYCDOT personnel will preview measures the agency will take to help move the roughly 225,000 customers who travel through the tunnel each
 weekday, as well as the 50,000 riders who use the  train just within Manhattan. NYCDOT will discuss its proposed street improvements to
 support travel alternatives during the closure. Changes will include HOV restrictions on the Williamsburg Bridge, the addition of Select Bus Service
 to 14th Street, new protected bike lanes and new bus lanes in Brooklyn and Manhattan. 
“This crucial project presents an unprecedented challenge for us and our customers, and we’re committed to taking their input and getting this right,”
 said NYC Transit President Andy Byford. “Ensuring that the public is actively engaged is an essential part of the success of the project.”
"To address the 15-month shutdown of the L train tunnel, which will begin in April 2019, the MTA and DOT are working closely together with
 elected officials, businesses, local residents and other stakeholders on a plan to minimize the disruption to hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers,
" said NYC DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg. "The outreach we are doing in these upcoming town halls is a crucial part of that process. We
 need riders, residents, and businesses in the affected Brooklyn and Manhattan communities to turn out and give us their input as our final plan
s evolve."
NYC Transit and NYCDOT have been aggressive in informing the public about the project since 2016, including presentations at Community
 Board meetings, media outreach, open house meetings, community workshops, meetings with elected officials and advocates, and a
 dedicated mini-site.  Next month’s town halls follow a series of highly-attended open house meetings in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens this yea
r where residents were able to learn more about plan details and discuss them directly with project personnel.

ABOUT THE CANARSIE TUNNEL RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT
The Canarsie Tunnel was one of nine underwater tunnels that flooded during Superstorm Sandy in 2012, all of which required extensive
 rehabilitation and repair. The Canarsie Tunnel suffered extensive damage to tracks, signals, switches, power cables, signal cables, communication
 cables, lighting, cable ducts and bench walls throughout a 7,100-foot-long flooded section of both tubes. Bench walls throughout those section
s must be rehabilitated to protect the structural integrity of the tubes.
The scheduled 15-month closure of the Canarsie Tunnel’s two tubes begins in April 2019.

I had done just that before posting it.  Spent about 45 minutes of my time doing it.

It looked fine in the window when I posted it.  Apparenlty, thorugh some quirk of the internet, like New York's MTA not wishing their messages to be altered in any way, the posting actually reformatted itself to present the problem I spent my time trying to correct.

(You remember one time I posted a news item and Metro Norh switched it to a blurb from Gov, Cuomo!)

 Repairs
 and Improvements at 34 St-Penn Station on
 1 2 3 A C E Lines
Penn Station LIRR-Subway Complex Will Remain Open
, Service Unaffected
 During Project
MTA New York City Transit announced today that structural repairs and
 station improvements at the 34 St-Penn Station subway complex on the
 Seventh Avenue  and Eighth Avenue lines will begin on Sunday,
May 20. Both stations will remain open and service will be unaffected
 for the duration of the work. 
“Penn Station is a critical hub in the regional transit network, and the two
 subway stations within this complex are two of the busiest in our entire
 subway system. For many visitors to New York City, this station complex is
 their first experience of the New York Subway. We simply cannot afford to
 have a major connection point like this fall into disrepair. This hub especially
 needs to be state-of-the-art, clean and easy to navigate – and it will be,
 once this important work is complete,” said MTA New York City Transit
 President Andy Byford.   
Crews will make significant repairs at the stations, including leak mitigation
 and repairs to the structural steel and concrete infrastructure such as station
 entrances, walls and ceilings. Other improvements and upgrades include
 improved electrical systems like cables, conduits, lighting boards, new flooring
 in mezzanine areas, new stair treads and illuminated handrails and new wall
 tiles. Two mezzanines will be upgraded with glass barriers, security cameras,
 LED lighting for increased light and energy efficiency, digital screens, and
 enhanced signage for easier navigation including digital, real-time service
change and train and bus arrival information. 
Three entrances will be refurbished with new stairs, railings, lighting and
 electronic signage that will display service and train information. Two of those
 entrances, on the northeast and southeast corners of West 33rd Street and
 Eighth Avenue, and a  entrance on the southwest corner of West 34th Street
 and Seventh Avenue, will feature new canopies. The entrance at the northwest
 corner of West 34th Street and Eighth Avenue will be enhanced with glass
 panels and new digital signage. 
Subway service on the  lines at these stations is not affected during the work,
 and both stations will remain open for subway service and for connections to
 NJ Transit, Amtrak and Long Island Rail Road though for customer safety, some
 passageways and turnstile areas may be closed during demolition and repairs.
Some of the repairs will be performed during overnights to minimize disruptions
 to customers, though small areas may be closed temporarily as crews work on
 various parts of the mezzanines and turnstile areas. The affected station
 entrances for 34 St-Penn Station will be closed one at a time to allow for
 continued customer flow into and out of the station.  
The contract for the projects was awarded in February 2018.  MTA staff
has conducted extensive outreach to local community boards, businesses,
elected officials and other nearby stakeholders recently detailing the work,
and signage at the affected stations and terminal areas will be posted
ahead of the scheduled start to alert customers of the work, which is
scheduled for less than eight months.
