That Chicago ambiance is a little too dangerous for me. I'll walk, better yet - I'll just avoid it.

I'll bet you schlimm still rides those trains and you can hear him in the background after the shooting complaining through the bullet holes in his newspaper about the smell of gun powder and how the HVAC should be more efficient at filtering the odor out. Cool    <just kidding>

The only odor is the stench of your putrid postings. Ick! <jk>

Just a philosophical comment:  Why are so many right-wing nuts so full of hate?

There's an awful lot of left-wing haters too bro', it's politics, it just cooks peoples brains.  Which is why the older I get the more I hate politics, it can turn friends into enemies and rational people into werewoves.

I'm not pointing fingers at anyone here, let me be clear about that.

On the concealed carry thing, let me explain how it works, at least here in Virginia, and I'd suspect in most places as well.

First off, there's no walking into the local courthouse, city hall, or cop shop, buying a permit, and then strapping on the iron and hitting the streets.  There's a training program that HAS to be taken, essentially the same as police cadets do. Firearms safety and handling, "shoot-no shoot" scenarios, that sort of thing, and you HAVE to pass it.  Then you have to go to court for a judge who gives the final approval.  Jump through all the hoops and approval is given.

However, a concealed carry permit DOES NOT give you the right to go out and play cop.  That's for the professionals, not the gifted amateurs.  Real cops don't like it when civilians play cop, trust me, I've know quite a few in my time.  Most don't mind a responsible "good guy" out on the street who's carrying, by the way. That "good guy" is someone who can make their job a lot easier as they can't be everywhere and stop everything, as much as they'd like to.

And of course professional police officers aren't likely to be monolithic on this as well, they're human of course, so there's understandibly going to be differing opnions.

I would agree about the dangers of politics, but historically, in the USA, you are making a false equivalence about the locus of hatred.

Possibly Schlimm, but the sad fact is there's too many people who need someone to hate as much as they need someone to love.

As Mr. Spock once said "It is not logical, but it is often so."

I'm reminded of a great quote from Colonel Erich Hartmann, the top scoring Luftwaffe ace of World War Two...

"Don't hate. Hatred destroyed my country."
