Report that all DMUs are having engine crankshaft problems so all engines will be replaced..  Somebody tried to reinvent the wheel ( crankshaft ) ?

This isn't the Cummins QSK19, is it?  Who has detailed technical information about the problem and what can be done to fix it (or redesign the engine cost-effectively to solve it going forward)?

Here is a tech reference for the QSK19 Cummins that you can read online.

Make that the Third snafu on their punch list, after:

- Refusing to issue track warrants to their freight (NWP) tenant in apparent violation of federal law. Some NIMBYs are upset about hazmat cars even stored out in the boonies (Schellville yard). Lawyers are cashing in ...

- Unexpected grade crossing protection malfunctions. The short (two car?), light DMU consists aren't keeping the rust off of the rails so the gates don't come down.  I've read they are adding scrubbers - literally steel wool pads on spring loaded bars or some such. Wonder what NCTD (San Diego) does on their Sprinter DMU line?

Initial operation is expected to slip into 2017 ....

NOTE - there is a another thread for keeping track of NWP / SMART trials and tribulations:

Activated link (bizarre forum behaviour on links?)

Like Denver, when bus people try to railroad, dumb things happen.

The attached link does not list all of the boondoggles that I'm aware of, like the gaunlet issue at platforms (Duncedumb!) and  (Local government not living up to in-place agreements will create more when the system expands in the later phases. Anderson @ Francisco will be fun to watch.)
