NYC subway locomotives
Posted by petedoc451 on Saturday, December 13, 2014 1:34 PM

Today I saw a lashup of 3 new-appearing diesel locos in the Rockaway Park yard. They have horizontal blue and silver stripes and they were numbered OL900's. I couldn't get a photo because of security fencing. For years the subway used modified GE 70 tonners. Does anyone know anything about these locos? I will keep trying to get some photos. Thanks.

They are NYCTA class R-156 and are conventional diesel-electrics built by MPI, model MP8AC.  They are for M/W service.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Interesting equipment and video. I don't see anything this exciting on the Gold Line in Pasadena!

Cool!  It has a 6-cylinder 800hp prime mover and an APU and only goes 31 MPH.  This is a very specialized unit.
