Chicago "L"

Was there any through Howard Street - Southside through service before the State Street Subway opened?

Did the Congress stub continue to be used for a downtown Southside terminal for any trains after that opening?

Was the CA&E terminal used for "L" tains in addition to the interurbans?

Through service between Howard and the Jackson Park/Englewood terminals began in 1913.  Some trains still turned around on the Loop without going through and some rush-hour only trains continued to terminate at Congress and North Water Street.

Wells Street Terminal was used by both CA&E and CRT.  I believe that the CRT trains operated into Wells Street strictly during rush hour.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

When was the Congress St. stub torn down?  I think it was still in use in 1962 for mid-day layover of CNS&M equipment.  I am certain this was the case in 1952.

Congress stub was removed in 1964, after the end of CNS&M service, when Congress street was widened.  From 1949 to 1963 it was used by CNS&M for baggage service.  A combine would wait at Congress St. until about 10 minutes before train time, then back down to Roosevelt Rd.  Combines always operated on the north end of trains for this reason.

CTA dropped Englewood/Jackson Park loop trains except for detours in 1949 with the adoption of skip-stop (A and B) service.  After the North Shore quit the South Side Connector was mostly idle until 1969 when the Lake/Dan Ryan through route opened.
