F40C running on Christmas
Posted by JohnS - Illinois on Saturday, December 25, 2010 11:27 AM

Just had a nice present on Christmas morning.

Only 20 minutes ago I had to stop at the Metra crossing at the Grayslake station on the Milwaukee District North Line.  Train #2608 inbound toward Chicago was due at 11:00 AM and was perhaps a minute or two late.  It was being pushed by one of the old F40Cs.

Sorry, didn't have a camera with me and neglected to catch the loco #, but I suspect it will be running on the North District line all day today.

There are two F40C's remaining, the 611 and the 614.  I passed the 611 this evening as I was bringing #349 in from the California Avenue coachyard for loading at Olgilvie.  Metra is extremely power short and the F40C's operate pretty much daily.  They apparently tried to purchase back the ones they sold off, but they'd already been parted out and scrapped.

Thanks for the info that they're running the F40C's regularly now.  Guess I wasn't aware that Metra was short on power.  I can remember that just a year or two ago I would sometimes see notices in Trains or elsewhere when one of them was running and everybody made a big deal out of it.  So I was really surprised to see one running on Christmas day,
