I thought this was an interesting article about the relationship between the growth of baseball in the 19th century, and the growth in streetcars at the same time. I wonder how many folks know the Los Angeles Dodgers were once the Brooklyn Trolley-Dodgers??
Mutual Benefits and Close Connections: Baseball and America's Streetcars in the 19th Century.
It's interesting too that it's kinda gone full circle - as a Twin Cities resident, I've been using the Hiawatha light rail line to get to Twins games since the line opened, and the new Twins stadium (Target Field) is located at the junction of the light rail line and the new Northstar heavy commuter line. The old Minneapolis Millers' minor league field, Nicollet Park, was served by streetcar and in fact was across the street from one of the major car barns of the Twin City Lines.
What are the Brooklyn Dodgers doing in Los Angeles? :-D
TomDiehl What are the Brooklyn Dodgers doing in Los Angeles? :-D
The same thing that the Washington Senators are doing in the Twin Cities and Arlington, TX.
I still laugh when I read about the "Utah Jazz." Shouldn't they have been re-named the "Hymns" or "Anthems" instead?
And what are "Colts" doing in Indianapolis?
If Amtrak did this sort of thing we could ride The Broadway Limited from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Then they could tell people to just get used to it, as in sports.
