Chicago & the Military
Posted by BNSFwatcher on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 3:26 PM

Not long ago (IMO), when I was in the army, I could ride on all CTA vehicles for free, just by showing my military ID card.  Great way to spend a layover at Union Station, cruising the city.  Is that policy still in effect?

Also found out, in New Orleans, that, if you show your "Medicare" card, you get a substantial discount for riding the trolley cars.  Do any other cities have "hidden bennies"?

I don't know about military disounts but most transit systems do have substantial discounts for Seniors.  NJT,  MNRR, and LIRR show the discounts on their rate pages.  NJT for those over 62, MNRR and LIRR for those over 65.  MTA (subways) also offer the over 65 disount but it is  more difficult to ascertain.  PATH and SEPT will grand Sr. discounts upon petition for long term card.  Amtrak does have Sr. Discount of 15% off certain rates but not on all trains or for all services (ex., Acela on weekends only).  Proof can be: drivers license, Social Security Card, AARP Card, special Senior ID card issued by some authority, and other things; can be singly or in combination with some of the other.  I have never had to produce ID for on board purchase, agent purchase, or machine purchase despite many saying I look 10 or more years younger than I am.  NJT has another "bennie": inter line ride.  Here you pay the highest fare based on which of the lines is longest.  Port Jervis NY Gladstone, NJ, via Secaucus. Jct)  would be $18.50 regular, senior, for instance is $9.00 based on the fare from PJ to NYP via Sec. Jct. thus saving the $11.25/$5.25 Sec. Jct to Gladstone fare.  Similar interline fares can be good savings.  It is one reason my RideWithMeHenry trips are so popular: they really are so cheap!
