For those of you in Southern California, the 6-mile Eastside extension of the Los Angeles Metro Gold Line will open this Sunday, November 15. Free rides all day and festivities at each station. This extension runs from Union Station (where the Gold Line currently terminates) and heads south and east to 3rd and Atlantic. It also features a 1.8-mile underground section with two subway stations.

I rode the Gold Line extension on November 9th before it opened to the general public. We made a round trip between Union Station and the Atlantic terminus in less than fifty minutes. The two underground stations are spectacular! The slow s curve over the 101 Freeway after leaving Union Station will quickly become a favorite photo spot.
The press on the extension has been very positive with only a few folks complaining about where the line doesn’t go. The best article was in the L.A. Times food section telling you where to eat nearby the stations along the line. There’s some great ethnic food for those who are adventurous!
Very cool! How did you get the preview ride!
The S-curve is the first step in converting Union Station from a stub-end terminal to a through terminal, as the Metrolink, Amtrak and eventual California HSR tracks are also planned to span across the 101 freeway and shave off minutes off of the arriving approach of trains to the station.
Yeah there's lots of great food surprises along the new Gold Line, mainly near the Mariachi Plaza station, Soto Station, Maravilla Station (where the train will drop you off right at the 24-hour King Taco) and the Atlantic Station, which has some good restaurants within walking distance.
I was with my mom when it opened and we were able to avail the free ride. Before the ride, I was feeling down and envious of my brother, as he was allowed to experience an Atlanta shuttle service since mom allowed him to to go Georgia.
I was on one of the pre openingt trips. It was interesting, and there seemed to be eating places at most of the stations.l have yet to check out the area around the Mariachi Plaza station,as it is in the tunnel.
