Is anyone keeping tabs on the SF Muni rear ender of Sat. 7/18?  I have heard the motorman of the second, and supposedly offending unit, switched from auto to manual before he was supposed to at the portal and thus could be the cause.  Any details or truths yet?

Any of you on the west coast. ABC news shows two quick videos of the crash at 18 minutes into the news program. Maybe some one can post it here.

Here's a copy of the video:  http://cbs5.com/video/?id=53131@kpix.dayport.com

The accident happened at the West Portal station which is at the end of the automated Muni metro system.  The normal procedure is to let the computer run the trains until they arrive at the West Portal platform, where the operator switches to manual control.  In this incident, the operator switched to manual while still in the tunnel.  At first, the union said because of schedule pressures...  with the consent of management, it was OK to run on manual in the subway.  Since then, management has issued orders forbidding the practice.

There are conflicting stories about the operator being on conscious at the time of the crash.
