Kinkisharyo built the light rail cars for Dallas. DART was their first big customer in the U.S.
I believe Kinkisharo-built (or built in cooperation) streetcars have been serving Boston since about 1986. The Boeing Vertols are all gone, and the latest equipment on the important Commonwealth Line is by Breda. They looked very boxy, not slant-nosed like so much other recent European LRT equipment. It will take me a little while to get used to that shape, but I must admit it has better front windows than the Boeing rolling stock scrapped a few months ago.
By reading down into the depths of the AZ DOT progress document, it appears that all of the carbodies were built in Osaka, and that Kinkisharyo had a facility in Tempe. Whether the Tempe facility did the final assembly, or if the final assembly might have been done in the permanent Light Rail Maintenance Shop isn't clear. Scheduled completion date for delivery of the entire fleet was in October, 2008,
If the KI Tempe facility was temporary, it may already be closed.
