This 7799 is the original article. Rebuilds like this aren't performed any more, since EPA rules state that the rebuilt unit must meet tier II emissions standards. 7799 cannot do that as it stands. This is why some relatively new locomotives that appear to be capable of being fixed after wrecks are scrapped. Then, too computer-based electronics cannot be "trusted" after being damaged.

Well, what do you know! CSX 7799 was here in Mudville, USA today (on Q 633) and I can say that it looks as if the cab is the original with a repainted number on the cab. The reflective tape/decals sometimes fall off and need replacement. I'd bet that BNSF had it run through a wash rack! CSX (as well as CP, NS and UP) does not use such things. Logically, then...

I didn'd realize that GE nose was that old.

In this picture, http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=678076 it appears that CSX 7799 has either been renumbered or got a different cab. Anyone know the answer?
