Does anyone know how much NS spent rebuilding 4001?

As much as they would have spent on a similar engine with similar damage.  With engines costing in the $2M to $3M each - the repairs would be less than that.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

It is supposed to represent the mane of a horse (i.e. thoroughbred). If I recall correctly, the blue-mane-painted locomotives were rebuilt at the Altoona PA shops.

I looked up that engine. What is the theme of that paint scheme? If it's a hertitage unit, what fallen flag does it represent?

Still in training.
