The picture makes it appear that all 3 units were on the ground - only one turned over on its side. If the non-turned over units were still on the rail - they would have been removed - on the rail and not set over to the side - with one missing a truck.
The cars with a panel switch would make it seem that a switch was involved in the derailment.

No idea of the specifics of this incident, just spit-balling logical possibilities:
Derailment caused by track defect. Engine derails, overturns due to derailing. Other engines somehow make it across succesfully (seems unlikely/lucky but possible). Several cars derail due to same track issue (not due to chain reaction of engine pulling them off).
On the other hand, the photo posted in the later post shows the ET44 with side damage and a missing truck and the -9 has a mangled rear pilot/steps and bent handrail, so the other two engines did NOT escape unscathed.

Yeah, maybe deadheads in third unit; I never thought of that.

Are there any pictures ? Reporting is very confused. How did engineer and conductor get hurt ? How does first loco turn over then next 2 did not then cars turned over? Or were the 2 injured D/H riding in last loco that was loco that turned over. Could crew jumped or did they walk back to derailment and slip and falll ?
Too many misconceptions from poor reporting. Don't have any idea what happene.
I believe that derailment was in Hiram, NW of Atlanta. The story I saw says the loco "overturned;" maybe that explains the injuries. Or maybe that's wrong.
One locomotive and seven cars of a three loco consist and 88 car train hit the ground in Atlanta, some streets blocked. Two crewmen sent to the hospital as a precaution and released with "minor" injuries. Small amount of diesel spilled, being cleaned up. Cause unknown at this time
