Seen me a high hood on the NS Mainline!

Was the third loco back in a mix train with a mid-train DPU. What are the chance it was being used or just towed?

Steve, others would have more educated guesses than I, but I'd assume it was running. Even if NS was just taking it somewhere to sell to a short line or whatever, it would seem to make more sense to have it earn its keep enroute than be dead weight. (Of course that's if it CAN run.) Someone here will know if NS still has active high-hood units on the roster.

Most of our yard engines move either isolated or shut down.  Of course, I doubt that NS prohibits non-turbocharged EMDs from operating in road service like CN does on our western lines.

Extreme care must be used when handling older yard engines that do not have alignment control couplers, they can jackknife easily.

We have a few (six I think) GP9s and a single GP40-2LW that have been modified with extra swing drawbars for the extreme curvature found in some of the industrial zones in Calgary, AB, their drawbars might even be articulated.  They normally stay in Calgary, only being moved to and from Edmonton for maintenance.

Greetings from Alberta

This one had amber strobes, which I understand can be remotely controlled?

Nah, most likely dead in tow.  Probably going to the shop for inspection or repair.  (Still plenty left active on NS).  And yes, amber strobes means it has remote gear installed.

If it was sold, then it def'n wouldn't be running. It wouldn't be theirs to run.

But otherwise, I nailed it!
