I don't see any harm in summarizing it for you.

  • 25 SD70MAC's (SD70AC's in CSX parlance) are to be upgraded/rebuilt.
  • Work will take place at CSX's Huntington Heavy Repair shop
  • Their primary upgrade is replacing the original Siemens control systems with Mitsubishi's MELCO control systems.
  • Their 710 engines are being refurbished and having new power assemblies installed.
  • Locomotive cabs are being upgraded with new floors/ceilings, LED lighting, display screens, electric refridgerators, and camera systems.
  • CCB2 airbrake system is being installed.
  • Trucks are getting rebuilt and new wheel sets are being added.
  • Process takes about six weeks to complete. First should return to service early this month with 15 to be completed through 2019 and 10 in 2020, serving as test units for an initial 12 month trial period to evaluate if it's worth continuing.

n012944

Problem is that, until Brian gets around to posting reference to it here, it's 'subscriber-only' and might as well be on the moon for all I can get out of it, except for what I can glean from the comments.

It will certainly be interesting to see what CSX does in the rebuildings, and what parts of the locomotives' performance is materially improved thereby.

Guys, this is worse than useless without some sort of source or reference.  I know the joy of being the first to pass on the 'latest' exciting scuttlebutt, but it only rises above the status of rumor and speculation -- two things we have far too much of in the railfan community already -- unless you can point to exactly how you came to know something.  As, specifically, here.

There is a news wire artcle on it.

One can hope these rebuilds come out better than the SD70aces did from EMD when CSX first purchased them.  They were junk.

An "expensive model collector"
