My 2 cents [2c] I guess that my most favorite locomotive would have to be the UP X3985 Challenger! I 've seen it up close & personal when I worked on the UP in Ft.Worth, Tx. at Tower 55. The second favorites would be the old "WarBonnet" CF7's on the AT&SF when I first started my railroad career. I was a machinist helper before I got an apprenticeship as a Carman inb 1973. I worked 2nd trick at the old diesel ramp in Cleburne, Tx, my job every evening was to work the 300 class red/silver warbonnet paint scheme units that were used for Amtrak service. These units & all of the old 200 class blue/yellow colored units were used for the CF7 program that we did in Cleburne Shops in the 1970's! That kept a lot of us from layoffs that decade! I love the sound of those old steamers & their soulful sounding whistles!

My favourite locomotives are CP SD40-2's SD40-2F's SD90MAC-H SD60's and SD60M's. Also i love CP GP38-2's.  For CN i love SD40-2W and GP40-2LW'S.

Also i like SD70 standard cabs and SD45's.

My Favorite was the GN GP20 beginning of the second generation and created a new sound with the blowers.

While about 8 locomotives on my "Top Ten" list are American, the top spot belongs to a French steam locomotive, Andre Chapelon's masterpiece, the 242 A1.  It was a (by American standards) relatively small 4-8-4 that was able to generate 5000 HP (or even more, depending on the source).  Rumor has it that the 242 was ignored by officials of the French national railroad who wanted to push their electrification program, and in 1960 the sole locomotive of this class was scrapped.

My first favorite is Frisco 1630, a 2-10-0 at Illinois Railway Museum,I was given a take the throttle gift certificate 14 years ago when I turned 30 and that was the locomotive I chose. My second favorite was the old CNW E's that ran on the northwest passenger line in the 70's My third favorite is the EMD SD-9043 MAC. As a matter of fact I have liscense plates on my F-350 crewcab dually 4x4 that say SD 90.

Tough. Probably the GP-9. Awesome loco and was a great performer. I have a model of a GP-9 painted for my freelanced RR in green+yellow and will be repainted for my new Freelanced RR in green+ATSF silver when I start building it. RS-11 and GP-7 are tied for second.

My vote goes to Santa Fe's 3751 class in the steam category. My favorite "homely" looking diesel is the SD40-2, because of the rugged look and the places they routinely work. For the heavy-duty diesel, my vote lies with either GE's AC6000CW or EMD's SD90MAC.

yeah wasn't that why the DDA40X became obsolete quickly. 2 SD40-2s have the same hp as one but one can still run if the other breaks down. not to mention a pair will have more traction than a centennial would've had. (12 axles vs 8 axles)

also weren't the SD40-2s given all the revolutionary upgrades the DDA40X had? (or rather that's what the "dash 2" meant?)

It wasn't really a prototype. It was the next generation of DD35s. It fell from favor basicaly because if one loco (the DDA40X was basicly two GP40s on a common frame) had to be shopped the whole unit was down. There were dozens of DDA40Xs that ran the UP system from 69' to 81'(I think) and a few even were put back in service in 83' dureing a power shortage following the aquisition of the WP (odd to se 8 axle units running on a railroad that only bought 4 axle power). At one point UP even decided they were going to make up time and re-geared the DDA40Xs for higher speed running (83MPH I think). They also re-geared some SD40-2s and renumbered them into the 8000 series (they were called the fast 40s). It was common to see 2 DDA40Xs sandwiching a lone SD40-2.

if it a steam locomotive my all time favorite is the 4-8-4 northern southern pacific g class 844 if it is a diesel locomotive it is the es4400cw.

I know.  Everytime I get stopped at a Union Pacific crossing, I pray that it's the 6936.  I have gotten stopped by the business train before, but sadly it had a couple of SD75s or whatever they are on it.

Hmm...favorite locomotive.  So many to choose from...

1. SD70ACe (KCS Southern Belle scheme looks fantastic on them)

2. DD40X (pure, unadulterated power.lol)

3. UP Challenger

4. Always have a soft spot in my heart for the RS-3 (got to drive one)

5. All NJ Transit locomotives

6. F40PH

I think I'm gonna stop there for now.  No, wait, one more

7. FL9

that is the same way that i had felt about the wsor locomotives was that i wished that i would have remembered more of the numbers because they had changed so many locos over the years and i was too young to be in the hobby that much i just asked what was in the cars and watched them go by and wave to them but i have gotten to ride WSOR GP38 3807 and "drive" it i guess you could say for a school project

i love CNW SD60s. they have a real "tough guy" look to them. almost like they're smirking at you

8007 is my favorite. the only one i remember the number on. it was leading a westbound manifest into Fall Creek when i was riding home with the family from the beach east of there. we saw the tail end of a train moving the same direction as us. eventually we caught up to the front of it. and there he was. CNW 8007 on point. mind you i've seen a great deal more than 8007, but being so young, i didn't think to memorize any numbers on them
