UP SD60M question.

Last week I saw UP 2368,an SD60M,with this info. under the cab."First retrofitted U.S. road locomotive with oxidation catalyst aftertreatment." Could someone explain what this retrofitting consisted of,and for what purpose?

One of dozens of clever and expensive gadgets to cause a more complete fuel burn , lower emissions and extend the service life of the locomotive. I must add that most if not all of these things have little or not effect execpt to cost time and money.

It will probably be a necessary item when Tier IV Emissions appear.

That ain't gonna cut it for sure , it's gonna take more than gimmics to bring an older EMD into even tier 1 compliance. More to come , stay tuned.
