New Haven electric and diesel locomotives

"Classic Trains" has excellent photo array of NH locomotives. I have seen a photo of the NH 01 electric motor. When did the NH discontinue the leading zero on their non steam locomotives? A few photos show the leading zero painted out, but showing the zero popping through the paint.

Lastly, did the NH refer to diesels or electrics as "motors" (as the CGW or CBQ) did?

Ed, my guess is that the "0" in front of the number was phased out (as repainting or other maintenance facilitated) after 1952 and the end of steam operations.  It distinguished diesels and electrics from steam.

Yes.  Especially electrics.

The two stub tracks butting against the New Haven station building just wesr of the station and north of the running tracks and platforms is still called:

"Motor Storage."

Dave:

I always appreciate your information about the northeast part of the US. Your knowledge street cars and trams are excellent.

I did ride the last steam-hauled NYNH&H steam-hauled passenger train in Autumn 1952.

Stan Barriger III, a fellow MIT student at the time, and I were on the rear  vestibule, vieing as to who woul be the last behind steam into South Station.
