UP's SD90MAC-IIs, What happened to them?
Posted by Commissar_Elmo on Thursday, August 6, 2020 4:33 PM

Ive been looking around trying to find out what happened to UP's Fleet of SD90MAC-IIs. I know that at least 9 of  them were rebuilt at Juniata and sent to Australia, but as far as i know the other 11 or so went to Progress Rail. What happened to the other 11? Were they rebuilt and sent to other places, put in leaser service or scrapped?

*correction, UP had a fleet of 40 SD90MAC-IIs. 9 went to Australia, the other 31 went to Progress Rail.

I've narrowed some of the units down but some are still unaccounted for, 9 went to Juanita for rebuild, and 27 went to Progress rail, the last 4 units paper trail ran cold, last under the markings of EMLX, or EMD leasing, im assuming that these went to progress rail as well, any info on the 31 units that presumably went to progress rail would be appreciated.

A total of 17 went to FMG in Western Australia, 9 in 2011 and 8 more in 2014.

I can't help with the other 3 units.

UP 8559 was rebuilt as a test bed for the Cummins QSK95 and renumbered CECX 1919: http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=4706788

It has since been picked up by Knoxville Locomotive Works.

Are the units you looking for exUP 8534, 8542, 8555, and 8560? These units were parted out and scrapped in Chicago in 2014.
