The F7 diesels were delivered in both the 'Greyback' and the Orange/Maroon paint scheme in 1949 and the early 50's.  And even F9's were delivered in that paint scheme in the mid-50's.  The solid orange/black scheme was the 'Repaint' scheme you are asking about?  I have heard of 'Repaint' F's showing up in old slides in either 1956 or 1958.  I remember lots of F's still in the orange/maroon scheme in the late 60's.  I think you are pretty safe with 'Repaint' scheme F units in the late 50's and later.

Just to add, with Milwaukee, you also have the F7s that were given HEP gensets, painted UP colors and then repainted back into O&B when they were demoted back to frieght, if they were.

The best would be to search for dated photos of a specific unit if you are doing modeling of one.
