Unofficial Union Pacific Heritage Fleet? CNW 8701 and 8646.

Hello,

I recently came across a Youtube video that showed 2 Chicago and North Western C44-9Ws in their original, non-patched paint.  The video was uploaded in 2010.  One of the comments for the video says:

"These two are never going to receive a patch or repaint. They are going to stay in the CNW paint until retirement, then sent to the Illinois Railway Museum. In fact for photo shoots the IRM touches up these two units with new paint."

I started looking into these two locomotives and on railpictures.net there's a photo of these two on November of 2012 still in CNW paint.

The two locomotives are CNW 8701 and 8646.  Anyone know anything else about these locomotives and why they haven't been patched?  Are there other non-patched locomotives from UP acquired railroads that are out there too?

Long live the J!

What about the ex. SP units? Would some still have the handsome gray and red paint sticking out of the otherwise uniformed yellow-gray consists?

SP 177 was unpatched as of July: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xy4LejT1BHw

I wonder if these units are unpatched simply because they haven't gotten around to the shop yet for patching or if there are indeed "do not patch" orders for some of these locomotives?

Long live the J!
