handling the renumbering
Posted by thomas81z on Saturday, April 6, 2013 9:06 AM

ok since big boy 4014 is coming back to the union pacific roster , how are they going to handle the

renumbering of the  SD70ace #4014 , i cant see them giving the big boy an extra number but who knows>

maybe they will just renumber the ACE & leave the rest of the class alone , thought ??Hmm

In Japan, where the class designation was (and is) an integral part of the locomotive number, this would be a non-issue.  H604014 would have been easily distinguished from DF5?4014.*

Or, simply add S (in microtype) behind the Big Boy's number - assuming the computer can handle an alpha fifth digit.  Or use UP(something) as a reporting mark.

One thing is certain.  Since the only resemblance between the two 4014s is the track gauge, it shouldn't be hard to keep from confusing one with the other.

* Just how many six axle (DF) diesel-electric classes does/did UP roster.  That would determine that ? digit.  As for the steamer, H = 8 driving axles, 60 = first (and only) with a 4-wheel trailing truck.

Unlike the days of 844, I don't see the Big Boy's number being the one that gets changed.  Particularly if it is not UP's property.  The potential 'exception' I see is that most of the time the Big Boy's movements will be "X" so it would be vanishingly unlikely to have X4014 meet X4014 -- a simple change of position in a consist would fix the issue for the diesel.

Occurs to me that the 'diplomatic' solution would be for UP to assign a special custom paint scheme and number to frame #996164-15 -- the locomotive will be almost 20 years old in 2019.  Or use that particular locomotive for a test conversion of some sort -- LNG, anyone? -- that would justify renumbering.

Well, the fellow in the video seems like a nice, sincere young man, but where is he getting his information from?  I haven't seen anything yet that says the restoration of 4014 is a "done deal", although I'm looking forward to it as much as anyone else.

As far as a number change is concerned, probably nothing to lose any sleep over. UP'll figure it out one way or another.

Better not say that where he might see you doing it!  He's already jumped all over someone in the 'comments below' for asking that, with no few obscenities and in CAPITAL LETTER SHOUTING.

He says that he has covered 'where he gets his information' in the video -- and indeed, he does, going on for some length (to me, perhaps with more than a smattering of 'the lady doth protest too much' defensiveness) about his special knowledgeable source.  I am waiting for some of the people over on RyPN to take up discussion on his videos, but I haven't seen anything specific yet, and I am NOT going to start something going...

[Edited to reduce self-perceived snarkiness and condescension in my original post language, that was not intended]

OK, I tried watching the video again, and had some trouble with the You Tube freezing up and stopping the video cold, so I couldn't get to the source of the fellows information.  (Not sure I've got the patience to sit for almost eight minutes anyway to find out!)

Anyway, I'd like to hear something a bit more concrete than word from the the head of the UP Historical Society, as sincere as he may be.  I'd prefer it to come from a UP press release or the rail museum in Pomona.  As a car dealer friend of mine once said, "I don't believe ANYTHING unless it's on GM stationary!"

I did read some of the comments.  Wow!  Someone needs to take a chill pill here!  You're taking this stuff way too seriously, son!   Oh, by the way, a hint here to the fellow who posted the video, if he's  reading this:  Stay on topic, don't ramble, get to the point quickly.  People want to hear about the Big Boy, not about the 5011 or whatever the number is, OK?

Starts at right around 5:25 of the video.  Some digressions and repetitions that you may want to fast-forward through, as he really covers the quality of the source in the first eight seconds or so...

The 'short version' is in the comments of his earlier video: 2.8.2013 Update.  This in context makes it a little less surprising that he's becoming a bit testy with repeated questions about his source and the veracity of the information...
