Hello everyone!
Here's a question for all of you guys...
Regardless of your personal favorite railroad that has been represented, in your honest opinion which historic NS heritage paint scheme out of all twenty units best fits these modern locomotives?
Please list your answer and then list your favorite railroad out of the bunch. If you could convince Mr. Moorman in changing the current NS paint scheme to one of these which one would you like to see applied to the fleet? You never know...he just might be monitoring this forum!

My two favorites are the NKP and Wabash paint jobs, in that order. The NKP job adds a nice splash of color without being too fancy. The Wabash colors looked good on hood units, especially the Train Masters. It's probably a bit expensive to apply but would be nice for special duties.
My favorites are Central of Georgia, Wabash, and Lackawanna, in that order.
Almost any of them look better than the Black and White they use now. I do like the horse, though. I would put it on the sides, too.

If NS was going to pick one color scheme to replace the current black-and-white, I'd say go with the classic Pennsy Tuscan Red with pinstripes. In my opinion it's the best of the classic paint schemes, although I don't dislike any of the others.
Of course, if they wanted to use up the stocks of black and white paint before they made the change the New York Central "Lightning Stripe" scheme would be a good choice too!
The one that caught my eye is the Interstate unit, even though I have never seen an original Interstate unit or the track of that railroad, something about that scheme is like being back in the 1970s for me. I think the NKP or Lackawanna/ EL schemes are the most attractive and would work best on NS units today.

Those have to be my favorites out of the whole bunch, since those are all railroads that I like.

Illinois Central and Illinois Central Gulf had a similar paint scheme in the late 1960s and 1970s.
In fact the ICG split orange/white was more familiar to railfans since the Interstate was only a short line out east, and it's orange/white RS-3s were repainted into SOU colors after Southern acquired the Interstate in the 1960s.

If I could get NS to change? I'd be happy with the current scheme in Tuscan Red or the S&A scheme with a horse in a circle on the nose.

I'm with you Don. I would love to see NS change the scheme to one like the old Southern Tuxedo scheme on the S&A unit or even though it would cost more the Tuscan Red scheme like the PRR unit.
Better yet I'd like to see a class of units specifically assigned to Intermodal in the PRR scheme with everything else in the S&A scheme. My suggestion for the units best suited for Intermodal would be the ES40DC units and the rebuilt SD60E units (which would make great power on the Roadrailer Trains).
Had to go back and look at them all to decide. I think a version of the NKP scheme with NS's horse logo in the center of the nose and on the sides would do the trick. Not too complex so as to keep painting costs down but with the yellow stripes to enhance grade crossing vis.
I'd have to say the scheme that impressed me the most was the Erie scheme, however if you wanted to keep it simple I'd be happy with Conrail blue. CR blue is one of my favorites.

I really liked the CoG Unit the colors really worked for a Modern Hood Unit.
One that impressed me the least: Conrail. Probably cause Conrail had similar locomotives when they were still active so visually it didn't feel that retro to me.
I'm in a minority here probably,but I like the PC unit. Looks a lot better on a SD widecab than it ever did on the merger locos back in the day.
Of course the canvasas back then wern't too good anyhow.

Agreed that the PC scheme looks better on the modern engines.
My favorite is, obviously, the LVRR. Others would include, in no order, DL&W, Wabash, Reading, CofG, NYC, Southern, and original NS.
The Lehigh Valley Railroad, the Route of the Black Diamond Express, John Wilkes and Maple Leaf.

Really like the look of the NYC and NKP schemes... not that the others are "bad" by any means, but those two look exceptional on these locomotives. PRR Tuscan Red is nice too -- though I preferred their Brunswick Green scheme.

NKP Heritage for me!! Keep the NS the way it is. Nice Heritage units but the NS looks great now.
