METRA 610 IS STIL LIVING
Posted by Mr. Railman on Friday, March 4, 2011 12:27 PM

From what i've researched, The locomotive has been sold to NRE and is sitting at NRE Dixmoor, south of Chicago. NRE's Dixmoor Location rebuilds EMD 4 and 6-axle locomotive trucks (wheels), F40Cs being in the genre. Does anyone know more about this powerhouse (the locomotive)

A fair number of the locomotives at NRE in Dixmoor have been there for several years, including CSX 5213, a MATE.  On the other hand, some get rebuilt or parted out fairly quickly.  NRE itself may not have any ideas or proposals for 610 at this time.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Rumor has it that Metra wanted to buy back the  thirteen F40C's they let go, but the last thing I read said they'd all been parted out and scrapped.  What was the number of the unit Metra had for years but was unoperable?  FWIW, I still see the 611 and 614 on a regular basis, i.e., just about daily when I pick up my train from the California Avenue coachyard.

It's been about 2 years since I was last down to Dixmoor but when I was last there on my way to Blue Island from Homewood, IL the 610 was stuck way back in the weeds.  Almost a year ago in about a month, I read a posting on a YahooGroup that stated NRE scrapped out the Metra 610 along with several other units sitting @ Dixmoor for quite some time.  I haven't seen a photo in recent time of her still there but if she still is there, maybe Metra could re-purchase the unit for parts in case something happens to the 611 or 614 while they are still in service.
