GE powerhaul damaged on delivery
Posted by jroebuck on Sunday, January 9, 2011 10:01 PM

Lastest 5 GE powerhaul locos delivered to UK have arrived.  However one has not landed unscathed and may be scrapped.  Part of the lifting gear broke whilst making the lift and 70012 fell approximately 13ft, braking axles and bending the frame.  See "www.meaker.me.uk/Rail/Class70-2/B03.htm" for details and pictures.  Presumably components will be recovered for re-use.

If its insured the insurance company owns it. It looks like GE increased its order from 30 to 31 units.

Revision 1: Adds this new piece Revision 2: Improves it Revision 3: Makes it just right Revision 4: Removes it.

To me the interesting part was that it fell back into the hold of the ship.  I have visions of it going right through the hull, but I would guess that what really happened was that it ended up dangling and still supported on one end.  Nonetheless, the crash must have been spectacular!

There was a cargo of grain below where the locos were carried - may have helped shipped survive intact.  Ship has sailed from Newport so can't have suffered too badly.  70012 subsequently lifted on to dockside, see http://martinturner.fotopic.net/p68663398.html for picture.

Those of you who think the US has foamers the photo has already had 7500+ viewers probably most from the UK!

A little duct tape and WD-40 and it'll be good to go!

May need some coat hanger wire and a pair of channelocks.
