Besides the Minnesota Commercial Railroad, Are there any others in the midwest that still operate Alco's? The big Century series loco's are by far my favorite ever since childhood. If you go to the MCR main office in St. paul, the shop foreman will give you unrestricted access to the yards if you sign a waiver. Just stay off of the equipment. They have an unusual fleet here. Look them up.
I work at Alter Metal Recycling in Mankato MN and we operate 2 ALCO switch engines. The one we are using now is a 1940 HH660 that was originally built as EJ&E 211. Our other engine is a S4 that was originally B&O 9004, built in 1954. The S4 is presently down with a bad prime mover and may be scrapped. There is a good chance that they will both be replaced with an EMD switcher before the end of the year. The HH660 will probably be kept as a spare. Matt

That roster is quite out of date, only 3 of those units are left on the roster. The pair of ex CP C424's never operated on the railroad and were sold to the Arkansas & Missouri. The C420 was owned by an outside party and is leased by its owner to an industrial operator as GLLX #850 and most recently has been on the property of the Hoosier Valley RR museum. RS11 #367 never operated on the railroad and is also owned by the same person as the C420. It is stored and was listed for sale or lease with a deadline for a contract at the end of April. After that it was said that the unit would possibly be scrapped. The S4's #1000 and 1001 were both scrapped a few years ago. These were not pure Alco's and had been repowered with CAT diesels by GTW during the 1980's. Units left on the railroad are S4 #86 (also a GTW CAT repower) and RS36 #900, both of which are operable. The RS11 #367 is stored awaiting disposition.
