I WAS WATCHING TV ABOUT THE ALASKA RAILROAD. THEY SHOWED THE INSIDE OF THE CAB AND THE ENGINEER WAS OPERATING LEFT HAND DRIVE. IS THIS A MESS UP IN THE FILM, OR ARE THEY LEFT HAND DRIVE AND WHY?

Not only operating from the left seat, but doing it with the newly-invented Hands off/thought control operating system...Laugh

Seriously, Bozo was talking to the conductor.  The engineer was only shown on the periphery of the picture when the front coupler was (allegedly) in danger of goosing that moose.Shock

The various shows in that series are interesting, but whoever writes the scripts needs a course in Basic Railroading.  Not to mention that the narrator has the delivery style of Billy Mayes...Grumpy

Well at least the "Tougher in Alaska" guy only did one show on trains, so he could be excused for not knowing the subject. An interesting topic would be is he more annoying than Matt on "Extreme Trains" !!

Anyway, some diesels are/were set up to have an operating stand on either side of the cab, especially on diesels designed to be used on branch lines where there was no facility to turn the engine around at the end of the branch. Otherwise I'm not aware of any US engines set up to run exclusively from the left side but there might have been one somewhere like an industrial user etc.??
