'Green' locomotives unveiled on St. Pat's Day

What could be more appropriate than green locomotives on St. Patricks's Day?

However, the locomotives unveiled in Chicago Tuesday by CSX aren't the color green. They're fuel-efficient locomotives, called GenSet, that CSX says reduce some pollutants by 80 percent.

The cleaner-burning units still use diesel fuel like those they replace, but their power comes from multiple truck-type engines mounted as generator sets that can rev up or shut down separately. That way, the locomotive draws only the power it needs depending on whether it is pulling railcars or merely shuttling from one part of a yard to another.

The units also automatically power down into “sleep mode” when they are just idling and waiting for the next assignment.
