gp40ph-2
Posted by factorysidepipes on Friday, March 13, 2009 1:48 AM

Can anyone tell me where I can get measured scale drawing of NJ Transit gp40ph-2? I'm building a HO scale model.

                      Thanks for any help. Ed.

No.  But, I'm doing the same thing.  I used railpictures.net  and rrpicturearchives to get as many views as possible.  Then I just scaled everything from the Athern GP40-2 that is the base for the model and an EMD elevation that I had against the photos.  I lenghtened the frame (I think it was 3 feet), shortened the fuel tank and used a Railpower SD45 shell I picked up at a train show for the radiator cab.  I'll have to see if I have a photo somewhere to post.

Not that you should just walts in and ask, try calling, but see if you can come in and see if you can see the real thing. Might not work though. Make sure you don't tresspass on RR property! Arent the GP40PH-2's entering their 40th year of service?

I don't know exactly how to go about doing this, but as noted above, study pictures ASAP.

I don't know how easily Transit would allow someone to come in, say to the MMC, and study these things up close. But there's tons of places where you can see them (just stand on the platform!). And also, they are now in their 41st YOS. They were featured in Locomotive 2008.

The MMC is the Meadows Maintenance Complex, their main repair facility.  The basic specs of the GP40PHs are in many books such as the diesel spotters guide.I see these engines everyday, but to describe one wouldn't be the easiest. They are an elongated GP40, with now rebuilt back ends. They originally were squared off, but now look like SD45s.  For a model, a rear section from one would be a start since they have the flared radiators.  I do know they are about 65 feet in length, forgot the exact specs, and some of the heaviest 4 axle units ever produced.  NJTransit had a group of engines built into newer GP40PH-2s awhile back, by Conrail I believe.  They are virtually identical.  These units, at least the original 4100-4112, started off working for CNJ, and often still work these rails as the Raritan Valley Line.

One of them was involved in a wreck at the junction of the Main and Bergen lines, resulting in a casualty.  The engine was rebuilt but renumbered in honor of the deceased.  It was one of the rebuilds, not from the original group.

Locomotives involved in train wrecks are not renumbered in honor of the dead. They are renumbered for superstitious reasons. If you rebuild and then renumber a locomotive then it is not the locomotive that was involved in a fatal wreck. It has been a railroad tradition since the very beginning. Locomotives would however, be named for fallen railroaders, but if it has a different number, then in the railroads' mind, it is not the same locomotive.

Thank you for clarifying that, It seems railroads have long standing traditions.

Yes these loco's do look like mini SD45's. I thought one of them was involved in a wreck with the NJC.

Looking good there. It will go well with the NJT cars you have there.  Please post a photo when you are done, I would really like to see how it came out.
